Location: Tierra Miguel Farm, Pauma Valley, CA (northeast of San Diego).

About Tierra Miguel Farm: Tierra Miguel Farm is an organic farm that is very active in their local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. The Farm's function is to educate and demonstrate sustainable agriculture. Farm activities have a dual purpose: (a) the production of nutritious organic food, and (b) enhancement and conservation of the soil which demonstrating to the general public and other food producers in the region that farming can be sustainable when conducted using conservation-specific agricultural practices. The farming practices are common to certified organic and biodynamic programs that involve enhancement of the soil through application of prepared compost and herbal preparations, cover crops and maintenance of biodiversity. More Information:

Together, the group will learn about sustainable agriculture and explore Jewish and secular perspectives on agricultural law and policy, ethical food production and eating, and share cultural traditions from medicinal herbs to favorite recipes.

The group will leave with a greater understanding of the complex issues surrounding sustainable food production and the necessary skills, knowledge and resources to affect positive change on campus and in our community.

The group will also sponsor ongoing events on related topics throughout the school year -- look for more info soon!

Work for the week may include: We'll be getting our hands dirty in Tierra Miguel's greenhouses and helping with spring planting. We'll help take care of trees on the property and will also likely be able to help with harvesting as well! We may also help with building accommodations for future farm interns.

Other Activities on the trip: Lessons and reflection sessions including arts and music, yoga, exploring food ethics, sustainable agriculture through a Jewish lens and as it relates to the American food system, herbal medicine workshop, week planting - sprout beans, interactive Shabbat (all trip participants will take a role in plans)

What we'll eat: We'll eat as much as possible (fresh and canned) from Tierra Miguel Farm and from other local farms.  Participants will prepare meals for the whole group on a shift rotation, with a focus on learning how to cook healthy, wholesome meals.  Favorite family recipes a plus!

Who should apply?!   EVERYONE!   We're looking for people who are passionate about learning, willing to get messy, excited to meet new people, know a little bit about food sustainability and/or Judaism, and who are ready to look at food and Jewish spirituality in a whole new way!
